Agency Mission and Designation:

In January of 1975, the Western Upper Peninsula Substance Abuse Services Coordinating
Agency, Inc. (WUPSASCA) was designated as the regional administrative office for substance abuse services in five western counties of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon). Dickinson and Iron counties came under the auspicious of the Coordinating Agency in January of 1982.

The mission of the Coordinating Agency is to develop, maintain, and enhance programs and organizations which provide substance abuse services in Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties of the State of Michigan.

WUPSASCA is a private, non-profit, non-stock corporation designated to coordinate the delivery of comprehensive substance abuse prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services, primarily through a contractual format with a network of service providers. In accordance with Public Act 368 of 1978 (Public Health Code, Part 62, Section 6228), WUPSASCA receives its designation from the Michigan Department of Public Heath/Center for Substance Abuse Services (MDPH/CSAS). This designation is confirmed by the counties within WUPSASCA’s service region.
