Mission and Designation:
In
January of 1975, the Western Upper Peninsula Substance
Abuse Services Coordinating
Agency, Inc. (WUPSASCA) was designated as the regional administrative office
for substance abuse services in five western counties of Michigan’s Upper
Peninsula (Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon). Dickinson and
Iron counties came under the auspicious of the Coordinating Agency in January
of 1982.
The
mission of the Coordinating Agency is to develop,
maintain, and enhance programs and organizations
which provide substance abuse services in
Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties
of the State of Michigan.
WUPSASCA
is a private, non-profit, non-stock corporation designated
to coordinate the delivery of comprehensive substance
abuse prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services,
primarily through a contractual format with a network
of service providers. In accordance with Public Act
368 of 1978 (Public Health Code, Part 62, Section
6228), WUPSASCA receives its designation from the
Michigan Department of Public Heath/Center for Substance
Abuse Services (MDPH/CSAS). This designation is confirmed
by the counties within WUPSASCA’s service region.
